Mueller Greenways and Trails

The 600-acre Mueller development on Austin's east side used to be a close-but-crowded airport, serving the whole Austin area. Plans were made to build another airport in Manor and decommission the Mueller airport, but the Air Force shut down Bergstrom Air Force Base in Austin's south east corner and made it available to the city to serve as the new international airport.

Anchorage

When to come?: 

The best time of year to visit Anchorage for most outdoor activity is the summer - long days that really never get that dark around the solstice, cool weather, and the city likes to play outdoors. Of course, if you're into cross country skiing or ski-joring, winter would be a lot better.

What to do if you have a sunny Saturday?: 

Anchorage is a great town to ride a comfort or hybrid bike around on the bike paths - two of the best are the Bird-to-Gird trail on the Seward Highway south of town, and the Tony Knowles Coastal Path near downtown.

Where can I go to get out away from the city, without driving too far?: 

One of the best places to get away from the city is Turnagain Pass on the Seward Highway - you can keep going all the way down the Kenai Peninsula, but near the pass you have access to lots of good hiking trails and campgrounds without much in the way of development.

What are some great weekend getaways?: 

Really, any direction you drive out of Anchorage will be great once you get past the sprawl. Some great places to go are Seward and the Denali State Park within about 2 and a half hours to the south and the north.

Tammany Trace

The Tammany Trace is an asphalt-paved 31 mile long rails-to-trails conversion on the north shore of Lake Pontchartrain in St. Tammany Parish in Louisiana. The trail is open to bikers and runners or walkers.

Veloway

Austin's best completely traffic-free road bike and inline skating path is the Veloway in far Southwest Austin at Mopac (Loop 1) and La Crosse Blvd near the Wildflower Center.

The Veloway is only open to bikes and inline skaters - no runners, walkers, dogs, joggers or other "obstacles"! It's paved, a one-way loop, and wide enough that you can comfortably pass slower bicyclists or skaters on the left.

The loop is 3.1 miles long and is not as boring as it sounds - lots of tight turns and there is one short but steep uphill.

Lance Armstrong Bikeway

The Lance Armstrong Bikeway is an east-west bike path through downtown Austin north of Lady Bird Lake. Parts of the bikeway will be on dedicated bike path (for instance, the west portion of the bikeway by Lamar and Mopac), but the downtown and east portions will be on bike lanes on city streets.

Using Lady Bird Lake Hike and Bike trail as a commuter option is not practical for many bike commuters because of the number of runners, walkers, dogs and other users of the trail. The bikeway is dedicated to bicycle traffic only.

San Antonio Missions Hike and Bike Trail

San Antonio is famous for the Alamo, but the city also has four other Spanish missions, all in much less urban settings south of the Alamo and downtown San Antonio.

You can certainly drive between all four of the missions - Concepcion, San Jose, San Juan, and Espada, but you can just as easily bike between them.

The Mission trail is about a 15 mile round trip if you do all four missions - if you want to make it shorter for a family trip, cut out Mission Concepcion, because that mission requires some bike lanes on city streets.

McAllister Park

Description: 

McAllister Park is next to the San Antonio airport, in north San Antonio. The park has over 15 miles of singletrack and paved trails that wind in and around eachother in a maze. There are colored trails, such as, red, blue, and orange that you can follow, although intersections are not always clearly marked. McAllister's terrain is pretty tame - trails go from buttery smooth singletrack under trees to pebbly limestone trails to jeep roads on top of a dam.

The city provides a confusing map of the colored loops at http://www.sanantonio.gov/sapar/pdf/McAllister_Overall.pdf - but that doesn't show all of the side trails inside the park.

Also within McAllister Park is the Salado Creek Greenway - an asphalt paved, 6 foot wide trail suitable for bikes, strollers, inline skates, or just walking. The McAllister Park section heading to the airport has just been built.

Walnut Creek Trails

Walnut Creek Metro Park has about 11 miles of singletrack trails that are mostly shaded, pretty smooth, and make for a great mountain bike ride for beginner to intermediate mountain bikers. Follow the blue blazes on the sign posts for an 11 mile loop that takes you through almost all of the park.
